Last night at support group we were lucky enough to have a special presentation from Dustin Lewis. Dustin is a personal trainer at Pivotal Fitness in Taylors. He discussed the importance of exercise and gave some great ideas to get you jump started on your fitness goals.
Dustin talked about how cardiovascular exercise can be a great starting point because it doesn’t require any equipment and can be done anywhere! Cardiovascular literally means strong heart, healthy vessels. This type of fitness is most often performed through walking, running, elliptical, cycling, dancing/zumba, etc. Doing these exercises can help decrease the risk of heart disease, reduce the risk of premature death and improve quality of life.
So what is the formula for cardiovascular fitness? When are we supposed to do it and how long?
Our goal for cardiovascular fitness is 3 days per week for at least 20 minutes. Now that doesn’t mean that you have to hit that mark right away. Start wherever you feel comfortable and build up. You can even break up the 20 minutes into 2-20 minute sessions.
Remember: do not start a new exercise routine without first being cleared by a physician. If you all have any questions regarding exercise or getting started with an exercise routine, feel free to e-mail myself and I am more than willing to help you or pass Dustin’s information to you!
