Hummus had become quickly known as an easy snack and great appetizer to meals. This food is raved about in the Mediterranean lifestyle and we’re catching on in the U.S. Hummus is a dip that is derived from chickpeas. This dish is created by blending chickpeas, tahini paste, garlic, olive oil and other desired flavors.
The best part of hummus is that it contains all three macronutrients. Chickpeas are a combination food meaning they provide both protein and carbohydrates. The olive oil counts as a good fat and voila! a complete food.
While hummus can be healthy, we do need to be aware of how we accompany hummus. Adding large amounts of chips or pita bread can pack on the calories. A lower calorie choice would be using raw vegetables such as, carrots, broccoli and celery.
Because of its good sources of carbohydrates, protein and fat, hummus can be an outstanding snack to incorporate into our diet and use in our toolbox of snack ideas!
