Oatmeal can be a nice warm change up from your normal breakfast during the winter. Not only are oats delicious, but there are so many different ways to flavor oatmeal that it’s hard to get bored. Even better than that, oats are packed with nutrition!
These little guys come from a cereal grain. While oats do carry mainly carbohydrates, they contain a form of carbohydrate known as soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is different than its counterpart, insoluble fiber, because it dissolves in water. This means that it forms a gel-like substance when it comes into contact with water and slows the emptying of the stomach. Slower digestion means you feel full for longer and blood sugar levels are more stable!Another perk of this soluble fiber is that it interferes with the absorption of cholesterol from food. This helps to lower overall LDL cholesterol (not the good kind).
So now you can feel good about your delicious oatmeal breakfast…just remember to add in some protein!
