Summertime is coming upon us quickly and tons of fruits and vegetables are in season. One of those being watermelon!
Watermelon is a juicy treat, but it also has great health benefits to make it worth eating. Watermelon is made of ~92% water, making it a low calorie snack at only ~43 calories per cup (diced). Along with an outstanding water content, watermelon packs a fantastic Vitamin C content (~12mg/cup diced). Watermelon also has a ton of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components, including lycopene. Lycopene can help aid in heart health as well as, prevention against multiple diseases.
Based on all these health benefits, watermelon is a good alternative to those high sugar desserts. Just remember that it is a fruit so it does have a higher carbohydrate content so be aware of portion size! Try adding watermelon to your next smoothie, accompanied by protein powder or Greek yogurt. You’ll get the benefits of watermelon while getting in your protein!
