Becky's Story

“I have always been a heavy person. Even as a child I was bigger than all the other children,” Becky says.   “I have tried every weight loss program on the market.  I would have success, and then gain it all back, over and over again.”

Several months before she and her husband Mart got married, Becky woke up one morning with blurry vision. “When I dropped my sons off at school, I couldn’t see their little faces as they walked into the building,” Becky recalls. “I knew then that something was terribly wrong and I had to get help fast.”

Like her mother, Becky had developed Type 2 diabetes. Her blood sugar was dangerously high, but luckily her eye exam revealed her eyes were still healthy and she avoided the retina damage that leads to blindness for many diabetics. However, she found herself on seven different medications to control her diabetes. She was then diagnosed with sleep apnea when she nine months pregnant.

After consulting with her doctor, Becky made major modifications to her diet. The weight began to come off – almost 40 pounds of it – and her blood glucose level dropped considerably. For almost 18 months, the diabetes was under control. Then, like many people struggling with weight, Becky fell off the wagon. “After I reached control of my blood sugar, I became too comfortable with my lifestyle and got sloppy with my eating,” Becky says.

Becky finally decided to take control of her weight once and for all with gastric bypass surgery, performed just one week before her husband, Mart’s. Now, Becky’s diabetes is in remission, and the daily pills and injections are a thing of the past.

“My only regret…why did I wait so long?  If I knew how easy it was going to be, I would have had surgery a lot sooner,” she says. “ I will say that St. Francis Surgical Weight Loss made it much easier with the pre-surgery instruction/coaching.  Following the doctors, nurses, and dieticians' instructions to a tee made surgery and the weeks after very manageable and easy.  I love the new me!  I love life and the way I feel.”
